The Way of Life is a Martial Art System that was developed as one of the first combination systems stemming originally from Chinese and later from Okinawan, and many other influences. Saminchilu in its original form is comprised of combination techniques between hard and internal styles with additional techniques of throwing and taking the opponent down to the grown.
Luis Ortega is the founder and the Grand Teacher of Saminchilu. Luis was born in Havana, Cuba in 1958. Luis began training with an Okinawan Master Kore Hanabel who at the time trained Judo to the police. Later, Luis found out that Kore was teaching Chinese Kempo at the Okinawan Otay School. He trained with Master Hanabel from the age of 9. His training expanded from traditional Kempo to weapons such as nunchaku and the sword. Much Luis’s training involved defending himself on the streets of New York. He put his Martial Arts in practicality. Along with his formal training he learned in the Dojo, he simplified the application of many techniques. Additionally, Luis entered many competitions until his teacher felt that showing off his skills were meant more for defense. When Luis moved to Miami, he continued his study in Tai Chi Chuan. He felt that hard style lacked fluidity and circularity.
Dr. Reznik began martial arts training in Tae Kwon Do – Moo Duk Kwan with Bill Santiago under Master Richard Chun and achieved a high brown belt[ . At the same time, he practiced Saminchilu Chuan Fa Gung Fu under Luis Ortega, achieving a black belt of third degree and nine stripes (equivalent to the fifth degree in Karate). Dr. Reznik also obtained training in Hapkido, Aiki-jitsu, Kyusho-jitsu, and Kali-Eskrima. Throughout his martial arts career, he ran several dojos (i.e., martial arts practice halls) in the South Florida area and was the head instructor of the Saminchilu system. He also competed in local, national, and international competitions, including FBBA, WAKO, BBL, NASKA, USKA U.S. Open Tournament, and the first International Martial Arts Competition, held in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1992.
Between 2001 and 2007, Dr. Reznik was inducted into the Eastern International Martial Arts Hall of Fame for such honors as Humanitarian, Instructor of the Year, and Martial Artist of the Year. He continues to train with different systems and runs his own competition.
Currently, Dr. Reznik maintains a full-time clinical practice at BeWell Rehabilitation and Counseling Group, Inc., in Hallandale, Florida. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Barry University. Dr. Reznik has published Saminchilu, The Way of Life; Love, Pain, Deceit, and Other Human Mysteries; Therapeutic Martial Arts.
